Origin

Created by bartender Erick Castro in 2009, first published in Saveur's Drink Issue #1 with the story "Nice Spice." Now widely considered a modern classic.

Flavour Profile

Good for ginger heat with real warmth underneath. Not for someone who wants a light, easy-drinking Buck.

Ingredients

  • Fresh strawberry1, hulled and chopped
  • Fresh lemon juice0.75 oz
  • Simple syrup0.5 oz
  • Bourbon2 oz
  • Angostura bitters2 dashes
  • Ginger beer~2 oz, to top

Method

  1. Muddle chopped strawberry with lemon juice and simple syrup in a shaker.
  2. Add bourbon, bitters, and ice.
  3. Shake hard and fine-strain into an ice-filled glass.
  4. Top with ginger beer and stir briefly.
