Origin

Smashes are one of the oldest cocktail families on record, dating to at least the mid-1800s as a muddled, julep-adjacent style. The whiskey version owes a lot to Dale DeGroff's 2000s-era revival of the format at The Rainbow Room.

Flavour Profile

Good for a warm-weather whiskey drink, or anyone who finds an Old Fashioned too heavy. Bright citrus and mint lead, whiskey sits underneath. Not for someone chasing a purely spirit-forward sip.

Glass & Garnish

Rocks glass, crushed ice.

Notes

Muddle gently — over-muddled mint turns bitter. Rye instead of bourbon gives a spicier edge. Pairs well with grilled food.
